So last night we were eating a rotisserie chicken for dinner. Camille picked up her chicken leg, held it in the air and exclaimed, "This was a real, real chicken, wasn't it?" When we answered in the affirmative, she grinned, "I sure do love real chicken!"

Summer fun

Tighty Whities
So the other morning when she went to get dressed, Camille could not find any underwear in her drawer. At the time I was folding laundry, so when she came to me with her problem I promptly offered her a stack of her underwear from which to choose. Caleb heard her predicament and offered a solution of his own: "Camille! You can borrow a pair of mine!"
C2: Really Caleb? Thanks! You're the best!
C1: Do you want a pair of tighty-whities?
C2: Yeah!
The next thing I know she comes out sporting a pair of boys' briefs under her frilly flowered dress. The best part, she had them on backwards! Apparently they were comfortable that way since she kept them on all day. At bathtime, though, when she had to take them off she admitted that she did really like her pretty girl underwear better. Phew!

The Pirate and the Pretty
Caleb donned his rain boots the other day and declared: "I look like a pirate!" So he does. Sort of.

The Best Moments of Motherhood
Rob spent this past weekend on a trip with his family, leaving the kids and I home alone. We had a very crazy weekend, full of misbehavior and disobedience. I feared I'd lose my mind before Rob got home when I saw this and realized that motherhood has its perks.
Because Rob had some time away, I took Monday off. I slept in (nearly 7:00 while Rob got up with Chloe at 5:30), took off around 8:30 and spent a good hour and a half at the big library picking out young adult fiction titles for my course. I ran a couple of little errands, took myself out to lunch (I've decided there are few companions more delightful to share lunch with than a good book...no unnecessary conversation, no requests for me to do things for them, no one spilling their milk on the table...delightful!). I had some more errands to run and then finished the day off at the bookstore. A day that starts at the library and ends at the bookstore is a good one indeed!

Last Day of School
Caleb's last day of kindergarten was last Friday. He had a great first year of school and we were all a little sad to see it end. Camille, however, is thrilled to have her summer playmate back.

Fresh veggies and books
So today I took a trip to our local Piggly Wiggly. It may possibly be the smallest grocery store ever but I will miss it when we leave. Anyway, I was in the produce department and wanted to get some pickling cukes but the ones they had were really old and gross looking. I saw the produce manager nearby and asked him if he had any more out back. He was so nice. He went to the back, got a fresh crate and brought it out for me to pick from. I wish I had thought of it years ago. I could have been eating much better produce all this time. All I had to do was ask!
This summer I am taking a young adult literature class. It's actually pretty cool - mostly just reading, something I'd be doing anyway. I have been keeping busy reading YA book after YA book and have realized how depressing so many of these books are. Most of them are about someone's problem. Lots of them have a lot of bad language. Here's a list of YA books you can read if you want to feel down. I'm putting them in the order I read them.
- Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn (tons of bad language)
- Boy Toy by Barry Lyga (about a boy who was sexually abused by his seventh grade history teacher and how he deals - very disturbing read)
- Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher(about a boy who learns why his classmate committed suicide)
- An Abundance of Katherines by John Green (about a dorky, whiny kid who keeps falling in love and getting dumped by girls named Katherine)
- Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (deals with a number of teen and family issues)
- Whirligig by Paul Fleischman (about a boy who accidentally kills someone in an auto accident and sets off on a mission to atone for his action)
- Mistik Lake by Martha Brooks (again, deals with a number of issues)
Yeah, I'm ready for some light hearted reads. Or maybe *gasp* I'll lay off the books for a couple of days and do something else instead.
Oh, I did just read Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin. That was good. Not depressing. Sweet ending. I actually listened to that on my new iPod as I cleaned the house. Not that it took me all that time to clean the house, but whatever.
I've just learned that our library offers free audiobook downloads - a very cool thing. Check to see if you library does too. It's - again - very cool.
